Ideas - might need 3 across

We have some friends who are experiencing serious health issues with one of the parents. They've approached us about helping out with their 2 DS's when one mom has to work and the other is unable to care for the boys. The older boy is 5 with an August birthday. I feel like he is small for his age. The younger son is 3 1/2 and looks to be a bit heavier, but not necessarily taller than my DS, also 3 1/2. I think my DS is about 35 pounds and 40" or so. I don't have exact stats on our friends' DS's since they just talked to us today about their current crisis. We may need to transport all 3 boys. We have a 98 Mazda Protege and a 2000 Subaru Impreza wagon. For seats that would fit the boys, we own a Marathon (fits all positions both cars), an Alpha Omega (won in a raffle, probably expires this year or next - I'd have to check as its in storage now), 2 GN (one installed in each car, have not been able to get a fit I'm happy with in center if Impreza, but good everywhere else, and a Parkway. That's what we own, not sure what the boys have for their seats. My guess is at least the 5 year old is in a booster. Maybe even our friends' 3 1/2 year old. Both cars have lap only belts in the center and no rear headrests. My DW usually drives the Protege and works PT, so is more likely until school is out to be helping our friends. DE is not sure she could install seats herself and get them tight. Once school is out (I teach), I will be the more likely one to have the kids. I usually drive the Impreza and generally get seats installed that pass a seat check. I'm looking for ideas on how to safely transport all 3 kids in our vehicles. Preferably without buying anything. I think our friends have an Escort wagon, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance.

Tina, mom to Ian, 3 1/2, in GN
