Swedish cars

huh? the US had the top tether first, loooooong ago (MANDATORY in passenger cars since 1998 or thereabouts?), and it's only now catching on in europe.

Nah, Australia started using top tethers in the 70's or 80's (CRS has a great study she can send you), and Canada's had them since 89 (and took on some of Australia's 'turn 'em young' attitude, but not quite as bad.

Only now is EU catching on to top tethers.

I think the US has the best 'options' if not best practice, honestly... most kids can RF to age 3ish (shadowing Sweden), then they can be harnessed and top tethered to age 10 ish (shadowing and improving upon most of EU and Australia), then they can be in fantastic boosters till age 12ish...(as Germany has had for awhile)...it's just that you have to be uber-educated to do these things

Funny how I'm always agreeing with jools:thumbsup: I think US has some good options but that's not really the problem as you mention. The problem is that most people aren't using what's available. Most of the stuff we talk about here, common sense to us who love car seat porn:thumbsup:, is stuff most people never heard about (and often don't believe) and don't seem to care about. Safety must be very easy to work well and people must be educated to use the easy solutions as a default, almost without thinking. I think that would be real progress since so many more would be "on board"

I consummated my early love of carsats by installing one in a '75 Volvo wagon in Australia for my aunt...she couldn't do it, and I figured it out (the old tether anchors were like keyhole shaped bolts... put it in the fat circle side and slide it to the narrow circle side, but it was crusty old metal far behind the seatback and hard to get to :p).

Well, it was 1987 when I was gettin' it on with that tether, baybeee... (another cool thing about that car? It has a rearfacing third row jump seat with 4 point harnesses...totally awesome for sticking her rowdy 6 and 4 yo boys back there!)

]I don't think the US does either?[/QUOTE

No, but you don´t have the attitude that they have.

What do you mean? Do you mean that's what *they* say?

yes, but what they DO know is that other countries are catching up. What they don´t seem to know, is that they have been mandatory in the USA for several years now and are catching on the EU market.

The Australians seem to have a superiority complex too Except in this case it's to (IMO) the detriment of children! It's like they acknowledge rear-facing "err yea rear-facing is safe but past 6 months it's not neccessary and forward-facing is as safe as" err whatever....

Yep, Laws and money (I think money too) defeat what is known as "Best Practice" elsewhere. I don´t know exactly how these things work in Australia, but I think that state finances play a big role in this. Not sure, but that´s what I think is going on there.

Sorry you feel that way....:( I might come across as a typical Swede who loves his home country but that's not me. I don't even consider Sweden my home country, I'm half American. I'm as far from a typical Swede as you can get. Out of the past 20 years , I've only lived the past 5 in Sweden. The rest in US. I've been to 35 out of 50 states there and have a good view of what's going on. I've also traveled around in 30 different countries and speak four languages. On top of that, I'm married to a Mexican girl and we raise our kids tri-lingually. As you can see, I'm a really screwed up mix of many different things:whistle: My views are based on what I've experienced, statistics, stuff I read, and input from our many friends around the world.

See that's what I mean, a lot of bragging ;) "I've been here, I've done this, I speak this many languages, we raise our kids this way". LOL not that there's anything wrong with it but when you work those kinds of things into virtually every post you make you can come across "superior". Don't worry I still like you though and I think most of us definitely appreciate your input and advice, I know I do!

In Australia, the law of physics apparently work very differntly. There, it's better to ff as early as possible to avoid neck injury. Makes perfect sense to the Australians but no one else:whistle:

Ugh tell me about it, don't even get me started! At one point in time *they* tried to make it so that my country would only sell/use Australian car seats too, because they're so much safer and better of course! Thankfully that never happened therefore we can use most seats from all over the world legally, such as swedish seats! I think it's nice for parents to have all those seats available to them to make their own decisions.
