Welcome!

Hi. Any seat where it fits tightly is safe. There may be some advantages to certain positions, both in safety and convenience. Theoretically, a second row center seat would be safest if the carseat fits well in that position, and if your minivan even has a 2nd row center seat.

Can you please mention which model and year is your minivan, and what your seating configuration is? If possible, please also list the model of your carseat and age/weight of your child. Thanks!

Finally, I'd like to move this topic to the carseat forum, but I'll leave it here for a while to make sure you see it. Thanks!

carseat position

Thank you for your reply, my carseat is an Evenflo Ultara I. I do not know the model # off hand.

My minivan is a ford caravan with 2 seats behind the driver and an additional row behind that with 3 seats.

My child is one next week but probably only weighs 20 pounds just barely. Should I keep her facing backwards,or is it ok to face the seat forwards now?

Thank you very much!

Seating Position and Rear-facing

Rear facing is safest. At that age, rear-facing will be a larger safety benefit than the choice of seating positions. I would suggest a good convertible seat with a 30 pound weight limit and a 5-point harness.

In your case, I think either second row seat is fine, with a slight advantage to the passenger side. This assumes your carseat installs tightly.

Our daughter is almost 1 year and just over 20 lbs. I plan to keep her rear-facing until the 30 pound rear-facing limit of her carseat. She is in a second row captain's chair behind the driver in our minivan, but only because her brother is on the other side.
