Had my Radian checked today:(

I went to the highway patrol and got my seat checked today. The good news is that my install was perfect. Another good item to note is that that patrol station gives out Radian's to some parents so the I think it's great that some people are getting Radian's and that the tech obviously had some experience with it.

The not so great part of the experience is that he said that DS is not safer RFing anymore (of course I know that is not true). I had him check the install on my True Fit which is RFing and he said I could just turn it around (that would defeat my purpose in purchasing the seat). Of course DS cannot RF in the Radian but he's safer in the True Fit. I gave him the proper information and he just shook his head and said "Nah". We uninstalled my seat so he he check the harness... he wanted to make sure I had the Safe Stop on properly... and I did... but then he reinstalled the seat with my LATCH strap twisted. I don't know if one twist makes a big difference; however, just looks sloppy to me and hence bothers me. I wish I could find a tech IRL who thinks the same way I do.... ARG!

He should have had YOU reinstall the seat. The parent is supposed to do the final install. <_< there are a lot of lackluster techs out there, it seems. Not that I'm perfect by any means but at least I know about ERF!

I agree... but in all fairness, I brought the seats installed just to get them checked and he said I had them installed perfectly. I knew I was going to take the seat out when I got home b/c we are taking it on a plane tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure I was able to install it FF since I had never done that before.

I believe someone around here posted a comment a couple days ago about something on this topic, a tech not advocating ERF something stated on the lines of "because it is only a small piece of their job." The person might not research like all of us.

Unfortunately I'm finding this true. It is making me frustrated! You have some techs giving the proper information out about ERF and then others totally going against it!:hitselfonhead:
Confusing the heck out of parents/caregivers!!!

Hence why: I'm very picky about who I do seat checks with. Not to be a snot. I love working with my friend's dad that is a state trooper and that's about it! lol ;)
The other trooper gets me alittle fired up b/c he never recommends keeping kids harnessed past the toddler years (3ish)!?! *sigh:thumbsdown:

It is a large "piece" of my volunteer position as an EMT. It is my specialty and I'm very passionate about it. Maybe because I'm an EMT but probably because I'm a mom.

Sorry, I was feeling a bit salty and needed to get that off my chest.:soapbox:

Well, dealing with techs all across the country, I have run into this many times and it is both frustrating and disappointing. I tend to steer clear of using police depts, fire dept etc as it has been at these places that I have encountered the most issues. It's a terrible generalization to make (e.g. my town has a fabulous fire fighter/tech) and sometimes we have no other choice in the matter. As a foundation, we've come up with an online video, a CPS Mentor scheme (where we pair our install techs with techs on our board who are VERY familiar with the seats we donate) etc.....but unless you are actually there doing the install, you do leave yourself in the hands of uncontrollable fates.

It's the same in every profession though - you'll have the fabulous teachers and the so-so ones.

When I look up techs on Safe Kids, I tend to go with females and ones who sound like they are Mom's who independently got certified. I also come here a lot looking for techs who post here as this bunch seem to be the most educated.

It doesn't matter that you had them installed perfectly. Part of the reason that we have the parent install is to make sure they do it correctly, but a HUGE part is liability. We are never supposed to install for parents, except of course in extenuating circumstances.
