2000ish MPV - any opinions?

DH and I are considering a 2000-ish (depending on finances) MPV. I know the IIHS side impact testing wasn't great... but looking at our price range (10K CDN) I'm not sure what is both reliable and REALLY safe? Anyone have an MPV of this era and care to comment? I'll take good/bad/otherwise! Thanks!

I have a 2000 Mazda MPV DX and I loooooove it! DH loves it too and wants to find another one for him to drive. It gets about 450km on a 60L fill (375km in the winter). It gets really great traction and stops great on the ice (it did even with bald crappy tires). The 2nd row captains chairs slide together to make a bench, and I leave the 3rd row permanently folded down so I can put all my 'cargo' back there. It's smaller than a Caravan (though you wouldn't know it to be in it) so it's easy to park like a car. I've owned mine since 2004 and it has never broken down, never cost me any money aside from a new battery, new tires and oil changes. I would totally recommend it! Several of my DH's coworkers have offered us money for my van, because apparently the 6-cylinder ones are harder to find and better. No way am I ever parting with it, I'm going to drive it until it dies lol.
