Sorry! I'm back...
Yes, Buckle Up Bears is really starting to take off and is run through the Co-Operator's Insurance Company. The Airdrie branch is the lead on this project, so if you want more info, you can contact them or pm me. Unfortunately we only train new techs once a year and we just did a training/re-certification last week, so we won't be doing more training until next April. The training is free (2 days plus a seat check event), we just ask that you help by participating in seatcheck events where you can. We hold 4 - 5 per year and they are always on a Saturday from 9am - 1pm.
I haven't gotten into the SJA end of things here yet, simply because from what I've been told, they do seat checks during the week and it seems that they are not doing seat check, but are doing road side checks in partnership with the police. I have young kids at home and no sitters, so I can't volunteer with them just yet.
I use my SJA training mostly to do private checks on my own time through referrals, but I would not recommend a new CRST to be out doing checks on their own. There is so much info to learn, that you really need some experience at seatcheck events or shadowing an experienced CRST.
I personally did my training out of Red Deer (that was the soonest course) and the course did cost money... about $200 or so if I'm remembering correctly. If you want to PM me, I will give you the SJA contact for Calgary. I just don't want to list her number publicly on this forum.
