is this tray safe?

Yeah, that one's made of foam and is not likely to be injurious when your kid's head hits it in a crash  (the lip is supposedly good as it keeps crayons from rolling off, too...)
The one to avoid would be that hard 'taby tray', if you're looking for something.

not looking. just thought it was a bit odd looking. i guess for an older kid though....maybe they could find some use on a really really long trip but i think my kids would think it was restrictive or somethign..but im kind of clostraphobic so maybe thats just me projecting onto them. lol!

Since there are no federeal standards for crash testing aftermarket products it could have been thrown up against a wall and then stompped on and then they *could* say it was crash tested.

A lot of people like to inclused the crash tested statements, but again there are no standards.

I would probably feel fine if a parent was using this as long as it is all foam. However, I would not feel comfortable with the crayons and coloring book flying around and hitting people in a crash.

i doubt a foam table is hazardous in a crash, but i'd be more worried about the things *used* on the table, KWIM? matchbox cars, sippy cups, etc...

Here's another worry from kids having free stuff floating around the car... it can roll forward and end up under the gas and brake pedals . Hasn't happened to me (recently....), but anything rolling around back there could launch forward when you brake and if it lodges under your pedals, you could be in a bad situation (don't know if it's true, but I heard of a family this happened to, and they rearended the car in front of them...)
