All I know beyond that, is that it's a typo, the price on the 'marathon' one is really 179, not 279... but other than that, we're all dying to see these things hit shelves!!!!

I had thought that must be a typo. :) I also noticed that I posted in Car Safety instead of Car seats. Sorry about that.

My three year old will nedd a new seat soon, and I'm waiting to see the harness height on this new seat.

Anyone know what 'watered down version' means when they're talking car seats? Maybe not as comfy or user friendly? There sure is a market for less expensive seats but well made and easy to use like Britax tends to be.

From what I hear, the "nonessential" items won't be included on the FP models, i.e. lockoffs, fancy cover, etc. They may also take away the ability to RF tether. I wouldn't be surprised if FP took away some comfort padding, as their previous seats were all hard as rocks.

But for roughly the same price as an AOE, I'd go with the 65lb harness!

I had hoped that the new FP seats would have the lockoffs since the old FP seats had them. I think they'd be stupid to not include them as that is a major selling point to alot of people. (me included ;))

I know the "watered down marathon" will only harness to 55 pounds. So if you need to harness past that you might as well go get a real marathon. I want them to come out too for my friend because she's not too excited about a $250 carseat, but I think $179 will be more reasonable to her.

Susan

ps...I *think* that's what I remember hearing about them.

I think the 55 pound weight limit would be adequate for a lot of kids. For a 48 inch tall kid 55 pounds is the 75th percentile. For kids in the 97th percentile for weight they would hit 55 pounds at about age 5. About 80 percent of kids would make it to 6 1/2 in the seat by weight.

Of course, if you know you have a heavier child the Marathon would be the way to go. But for most people there wouldn't be any difference. Even for a heavy kid a 55 pound seat would get them to a decent age for a booster.

These sound interesting to me. I'll be watching for them. I still have my FPSE, in use! We've been pleased with it. Yeah, it's big, bulky, but sturdy, easy to get a rock hard install, comfy and safe.

Shoot yeah..the 55lb weight limit would still work great for us here. With my just barely 40lb 6.5 yr old hehe He'll be in that MA til he's 12 LMHO (of course, just kidding, seat would expire before then hehe)

Anyway...interesting...I'm anxious to see

My dd is 4y4mo, 45 inches and 43 pounds (about 100% for height and 95% for weight), with a 16" torso. She'll probably outgrow a Marathon by height around 5.5, and right around 50 pounds, maybe slightly less. She's been in the 90th+ percentiles for both height and weight since 9 months old. I think the 55 pound weight limit on the FP version more accurately reflects what that seat is capable of, and should take the vast majority of kids to a safe booster age.

I agree, Jenny... the 65 pound limit currently is based on the 95th percentile 6 yo (IIRC), and 55 pounds would be an 'average' 8 yo...really, I think it's more than enough (and might be a marketing ploy to keep selling marathons at a higher price, people really do buy seats based on a 'dollars per pound' mentality :D)

My kids are too tall for the MA at about 40-45 pounds, anyway, of course they are utterly scrawny stringbeans (I'd take a few extra pounds, if they would just EAT an entire meal sometime, rofl!)

Man, I was really hoping the FP seats would come with lock-offs as it makes it so easier when using in so many different cars.

But the new seats look nice and I'll take a "Marathon-esque" seat for $170 any day :) I agree with all of you about the weight issue really being a non-issue, so that's a good thing

Here's another question about the seats:

Will we be able to tether RF in the FP seats like we can do with the Britax seats?

That's one thing I LOVE about the Britax seats, I don't like how most RF seats feel so wobbly. I know I know they are supposed to do that , but I don't have to like it!

My guess is that they will differentiate them by making the Fischer Price ones ugly as sin. Seriously. I really get the feeling that the manufacturer's don't so much attempt to make the more expensive seats pretty as purposely make the cheap ones ugly.
