Do you think a carseat is a good B-day present? (Update in the OP)

My DD#2 will be 1 y/o soon, and DH and I were discussing what to get for her.
She has more books/toys/clothes than some small countries, so I suggested that we buy her a new seat instead (besides the fact that I've had my eye on the EFTA at babies r' us for a while now ;) ). DH doesn't think it's a good gift.. I gave him the "what could be a better gift than keeping her safely RF for at least an extra year" shpeil, but he's unconvinced... Would you buy your DC a carseat as a B-day present?

For a 1 year old, yes. Older than that I think the car seat should just be general you need, so you get and give them something more fun for the birthday/holiday. I've been known to give my babies bowls and sippy cups for gifts. I don't give the kids shoes for gifts either because they need them and would get them anyway. A baby won't remember the gift anyway. They'll just enjoy playing with the wrappings and the box. What could be more fun than a huge box?

Absolutely! What better gift could you give than the gift of life?

Actually, my kids still think (at 4, 10, & 11 1/2) that a new car seat is a cool gift.

My kids have both received seats as gifts & LOVED THEM! ds got a Nautilus for his 3rd birthday and dd got a Fairy booster for her 6th.

Yes, I would!! At least they will have it for a couple of years and they can't break it, lose it and throw it away:D

I'd like one for my B-day LOL! I think a new carseat is a great idea for any age. My 8 year old thought it was the best "gift" when I surprised her with her pink cover... although it wasn't for her b-day. Maybe get the child something else that is little too, but definately a carseat is a neat gift. My kids have the carseat LOVE like I do!

I voted No. But, it really depends on the finances of the family. If the family really can't afford both, then I would say it would be acceptable.

Also, if the child is very young (say turning 1 year) and the child is a younger sibling (so there are plenty of hand me down toys) then I also supposed that is acceptable.

But, when it comes to "things" there are 3 groups. Needs, Wants, and Desires right? I just don't think it is appropriate to give a child a "need" as a birthday gift. I'm all for being practical, but you are only young once. Kids should get fun things for their birthday.

I think it depends on the seat and child. If I got Piper a pink booster she would love it. If I got her a Madison Regent she'd love it. If I got her a Nautilus she'd be disappointed. If I got her an Apex 65 she'd be disappointed. So it depends on if she'd like it a whole lot or not.

Nathan says it's a bad idea too.

it just depends on the child. getting a seat for either my youngest DS or DD for a birthday woudl be GREAT. They would LOVE it.

for my older sons forget it. they wouldn't appreciate it nor be very happy about it. tho we don't usually get them anything that exciting anyway. mmmmm...maybe that's what i get for eldest DS for his birthday - the new monterey! if of course it decides to actually be available this century. his b-day is end of may so mAYBE?

I have to agree with this. That's also why I don't buy my kids clothes for gifts. I mean, they'll get clothes because they need them. Now maybe when they're teenagers and some special clothing item is a want, that will change, but not for now.

I did buy DD a Parkway because she's turning 5 in 2 weeks, and I feel like her birthday is a good milestone for her to start using a booster sometimes, but I'm not going to wrap it as a gift or anything.

Yes!

Especially at that age - they're more interested in the wrapping paper and boxes anyway. :p

Exactly same with my dd. In fact, I should have gotten her the Pink cover package through SKJP for her Radian BEFORE the darned prices went up. It would have made an excellent Christmas gift. Now it's too late and I can't afford or justify it. :(

She loved the Tiffany Parkway as a Valentine's gift instead of candy with the understanding it was only going to be occasionally used until she's much older. If it had been the Greystone cover -- Forget about it!! :p

With a 1 year old, you can give whatever you darned well please and it won't matter. But not in a year or two ;)

My 3 oldest kids have gotten car seats for their first birthdays. I already had a seat for my fourth but I asked DH's family to pitch in and get him one for Christmas - they didn't.

I think safety is the best gift to give!

I think it would be fine. My dh vetoed me on it tho for our baby's first birthday. He said we'll get her something for her b-day and just get her a carseat when she needed it.
