Changing rear-facing laws?

Not sure if this is the right place or this has been discussed before but I heard someone say (not a tech) that there is talk about rear-facing laws being changed to 30lbs/2 years. Anyone know anything about this? It would be awesome if it were true and actually happened but with the crummy carseat laws in some states I kind of would be surprised if it actually came to be. I'll keep my fingers crossed though! :)

I think a 2 or 30 law would be good and get most folks a heck of a lot closer to best practice than they are now. Will it happen? I am not holding my breath, but it would be fantastic!

It would have to be on a state by state basis, carseat laws aren't federal. What this makes me think is that the message is finally getting 'out there', though :) (only a few states even say 1/20 for ff, most just say a carseat, and some carseats are getting better about pushing RF longer, like Cosco has a minimum FF size of 22 pounds, 1 year, AND 34 inches tall, which is definitely older than a year, in most cases...)

The word is gettin out there. Most of the mothers on the two BB's I visit will be doing ERF. I too wish there were better laws out there, but I personally do not forsee it happening for a while.

I don't know about changing the laws, but it would go a long way if we could at least get carseat manufacturers, child safety advocacy groups and pediatricians to repeat "2 and 30" ad nauseum the way they currently repeat "1 and 20."

That would be great though! I doubt for a while it would happen though. Look how long its taking boosters(very simple thing!) to catch on and become laws in states even though theyve been used for a LONG time...ERF is still fairly new.

While it'd be great, I wouldnt hold my breath on a law anytime soon. I think it would be better if people stopped repeating the "1 and 20" rule to every new parent and everywhere you see! Most parents arent even aware you CAN RF past a year and 20 pounds thats how much that mantra sticks in their heads. If the AAP recommends ERFing why are so many peds (who are supposed to follow their rec's) so not on board with it???

My daughter has her 1 yr appt tomorrow and I am going to ask about which way she should be facing just to see how he answers. 1 1/2 yrs ago with DD1 he said at 18 lbs and 11 months she could FF cause shes "close enough"

I know in WI the way the law is written it sounds like you MUST forward face after 1 and 20. I've even heard cops go so far as to say RFing past a year and 20 pounds is illegal since the law states they must be in a forward facing child restrain until age 4 and 40 pounds...so they take that as meaning they MUST be FFing. I asked two cops on the Police Dept where I live and they agreed that you must be forward facing after age 1...scary huh??

I wonder what our ped will say at dd's 1 yr appt. She's 8.5 months and already 21lbs. I haven't seen anything about carseats at this peds office, but he did ask last year at oldest ds's 6yr appt if he rode in a booster seat. He actually asked ds and he said no! The dr just looked at me like I was stupid. When I told him ds was still in a 5pt harness because he didn't have the ability to sit still in a booster he seemed really interested and was curious as to what seat ds still fit in, as he was and is really tall for his age. We had an entire conversation on seats that harness past 40lbs. Hopefully he talked to the other dr's at the practice and someone listened!
