CPS certification?

I have a 15-month old son and am very interested in car seat safety -- so interested that I am considering becoming CPS certified. I am considering it both to further educate myself (beyond the one class I took while pregnant), and to help out family & friends with their carseat questions & installations. I *might* consider offering services to strangers (in-home visits to install/check installations) for a nominal fee, but this wouldn't be the purpose of the certification as I have a full-time career already. My husband is not sure it's worth the four vacation days I will have to use to get certified. For those of you who have done this, why did you do it? What do you use your certification for? Are you happy you did it? Thank you!

Bumping this, because I'd like to know, too! I'm registered for the course next month, and can't wait! But I have no idea how people use the certification afterward. :)

I just completed my course a few weeks ago so can't really tell you much, but I will say that I do not regret for 1 second taking the class. Sure, it was a pain arranging child care for my kids since they don't go to daycare but it was 100% worth it.

My only word of caution. You are not going to make a ton of $$ as a tech. I am going to be 100% volunteer. I have no desire to do checks on my own and charge for them. I also don't want to worry about liability issues so I wold much prefer to check at events sponsered by Safe Kids.

Like PP said you could do safekids sponsored checks getting rid of the liablity (and well the danger of going to others homes that you dont know) and get experience and be able to use your skills.

I use it where I work but only once or twice a month (its not my normal job). I'd say if its not too much of a hassle you should try. Its great experience, gives you a little bit more credibility to talk to others, and you could do public checks as well with Safekids
