My son is 3 1/2 and is in the center of the back seat-with an anchor installed by Toyota (we have a 99 camry). We need to add an infant seat. Should i move my son over to one side -not using an anchor-since it's not an option) and put the new baby on the other side or should i keep him in the middle and add the baby to one side. Thanks!

Congratulations

Really, a harness style carseat in any position in the back is very safe - rear facing seats are slighlty more safe in an outboard position than a forward facing seat.... It might easier to have newborn outboard & bigger kiddo in the middle still - I always liked having the room on the other side enough to close the door behind me while helping to buckle so as to keep warmer in the snowy months  But, sometimes kids need to be separated a bit for behavioral reasons - it's just easier & safer to keep a bit of distance between them as opposed to having to take your eyes off the road ;) (On a side note, this is one reason I love seats that harness past 40 pounds, LOL) Anyway, what really matters is that both seats are installed correctly - since any of the back seat positions are very safe, I'd say the primary concern is making sure that they are secure, moving less than 1" & after that it's personal preference

Does the '99 Camry really only have a top tether in the center? I have a '95 and it has one for each seat in the rear, three in all. I installed each one. All you do is buy the 'kit' and screw it into the exisiting pre-drilled, threaded holes.

I really can't believe anchors aren't available in the outboard positions of the '99 Camry. I would double-check that. It shoudn't be a problem to have the anchors installed outboard (either at the dealership, or order the kit(s) and DIY).

All forward-facing carseats should be tethered. It greatly reduces head excursion and the risk of head/neck injury.

You can choose to keep your oldest in the middle, if it's possible to fit the infant seat next to it, or you can move him outboard--it's really up to you, and what will fit.

Huh, I swore I've seen outboard tether anchors in a 1999 Camry - I was assuming they got a 3rd installed just so kiddo could more safely sit in the middle....
