New Car!

Well, we did it, we bought a new car. I am going to go pick it up this afternoon. We signed all the paperwork yesterday and they still had to clean the car, fuel it up, and check everything before we drive off with it. It's a 2004 VW Jetta Wagon, brand new even though it's last years model, so we got a good deal on it. I am so excited, this is the first car I have ever had that has latch and built in tether anchors! It also has the side curtain airbags standard (ours is the base model, and it's still loaded!) I can't wait to drive it tonight and get rid of my 98 Taurus that is dying. So, this is the first time I am going to install Frank's RA using LATCH and I was wondering, does the latch strap go in front of or behind the crotch strap when rearfacing (closer to the rear of the car or the front of the car?) It looks like it could go either place, but I wanted to double check first. Thanks! Can't wait to get some pictures and show you all!

CONGRATS

I'm not sure what you mean about using the LATCH rear-facing in regards the crotch strap, though

You know when you install the seat with the seat belt the crotch strap ends up being between the vehicle seat back and the seat belt (at least that's how it fits with my seat) is the routing the same for the LATCH belt? I've never used LATCH before and was playing with it last night and got confused. Now that I have had a chance to play with it a bit more (brain wasn't working last night, lol) it looks like the LATCH strap routes the exact same way a seat belt does, right? And you don't use the lock-offs with LATCH, right? If I'm still not making any sense I can try to get some pictures of the way the seat is installed right now to show you what I mean. Thanks!

Nope, no need for the lock-offs since you won't be using the vehicle belt & the LATCH straps don't come anywhere near the crotch strap ;)

Thanks! I suppose it will make more sense to me how it's supposed to be once I get it installed and have my neighbor check it for me (pretty soon I'll be able to do that on my own!)

Also, do you use anything to protect the seat back from dirty shoes? I was thinking about just taking an old towel and cutting out for it to slip over the headrest, is that something that is okay to do?

That should be OK so long as you have a tight install before using it ... I remember someone here used an old sweatshirt/sweater tying the arms behind the seat or something  My kiddo hates wering shoes anyway so I've always just taken them off - in the winter I kept some fleece slippers handy & she covered herself up in a snuggly fleece throw blanket :)
