Thick Coats

Ok, I know not to use a thick coat in the car. But I have what may be a stupid question, how do I know what's too thick? Or what isn't?

typically, if you have to adjust the harness in order to fit your child in the carseat, then the jacket is too thick.

I take off even an unlined denim jacket from my son before putting him in. I always have a blanket in the car though, so I will put that over him.

I do one of two things.

1. Put coat on child after child has been in seat without coat and without loosening the harness. If I can fight the buckle together, we are good to go.

2. Put child in seat with coat on and tighten harness as much as I can then take child out without loosening the harness and put her back in with out coat. Can I pinch the harness? If not, then the coat is OK. If I can pinch the harness, then the coat is too thick.

I have a coat for youngest dd that looks too thick. If I posted a pic here, I would be told to take the thick coat off, but it does pass the pinch test when I take it off and rebuckle her. The harness is not as tight as I would like, but this has been a compromise for dh, who won't wait for dd to take her coat off and put in back on when we are going places.
