temporary car seat?

I will be flying to Hawaii next month with my 2 1/2 year old. I really don't want to bring his big heavy car seat (I will be alone) since we won't be going in a car other then the taxi ride to the cruise ship. Has anyone seen those light weight temporary car seats that is meant just for a short taxi ride? I can't remember where I've seen one and that seems like it would be a great solution.

Thanks

If you mean the Tote-N-Go, I don't recommend it at all ... difficult to get the harness on correctly depending on child's changing outfit - jacket or no, etc. - & difficult to install with less than 3" of movement (not supposed to have even 1" of movement! Plus, it's not approved for use on airplanes :( We have this seat & hate it: it lives in a backpack in my trunk for emergencies ONLY.
  • The FAA suggests that all infants & toddlers ride in their approved carseats on the airplane! I assume this is why parents with small children get to board first - many unrestrained infants & improperly restrained toddlers suffer injuries during turbulence.... I witnessed 2 toddlers get bumps & bruises - 1 got trapped between seats - during turbulence when we recently flew to Disney World - my 3 y.o. was quite happily, comfortably & safely seated RF in her carseat =)

I'm a 100# single mom with a chronic illness, but I carried our heavy Britax convertible through the airport, using the motorized carts for help when needed ... others in this forum have used those metal carts to strap carseat & carryon in for transporting through the airport. I strongly believe that amidst the changes inherent in travel, a kid feels more secure & content with something as familiar as one's own carseat :) Have a great trip!

In general, it's the pits, but for just this type of situation, it's really pretty good.... as long as you are well-practiced in installing it and it fits well to your child (fit him before you leave in similar weighted clothing). I had to use this for my 5 yo dd this summer (ha, in Hawaii!) we drove to a parking lot in one car, had to hike a mile to a remote beach cabin, and then left a week later in another car... the Tote n Go was fine for the shortish drives we took. For a child over 35 pounds, the Ride Safer Travel Vest is an awesome choice, too (yup, I even had one of those...they both crammed nicely into my backpack and survived the hike just fine :D )
