Not impressed with the APEX

I ordered an APEX 65 from albeebaby.com. The tan/brown on sale for $79.99.

I'm not that excited or impressed. :(The older DOM 9/06 really doesn't bother me. This is just an extra seat for DS to ride in my sis's car. She only takes my DS a couple times a month.

Problem: My DS is on the 3rd set of slots! Even w/ the toddler insert taken out! (DS stats 17months, 29lbs, 33", 13"torso. The second set is way below his shoulders. He has about 5 inches of torso growth to the top slots.
The lowest slots are 9inches!!! *sigh Why would anyone put a child that small FF is beyond me!

DS is still RF in our van (marathon) and car (Scenera). I had a ComfortSport in my sister's car, but DS is 29lbs full belly, clothed, shoes at night. The comfortsport only RF to 30lbs. I installed our Touriva in her car. He has about an 1 1/2 of hard shell to RF in the Touriva.

Once he hits the limits on the Touriva he'll be riding in the APEX.

I agree with your opinion. I had originally bought the Apex to keep my then-6yo harnessed instead of spending the $$$ on a Regent, since I didn't know how long I'd keep her harnessed, but it felt cheap to me. Wound up buying the Regent anyway. The Apex is SO wide, but it's wide and boxy, and didn't seem to fit the curves of a child well at all. Plus it felt flimsy to me.

it is true that the dorel seats all seem flimsy, but i actually appreciate the apex for what it is... a cheap way of getting a HWH seat, although now that the GN is out, that may be a better alternative. we got an apex for MIL's CRV, based on a lot of positive reviews from here about a year ago, and we actually like it. it has plenty of padding and EPP foam in the headwings (not that i think it helps much, given the shallow design of the head wings). it installs well in the CRV (although i don't know if it installs well in other cars). DD1 never complains about discomfort (but she complains about the lack of SIP wings to rest her head against ;)). the harness is easy to tighten and adjust. i wouldn't want it as my primary seat, but for MIL's car it fits the bill perfectly.

We will definitely be buying a Regent for our Town and Country. That is the main vehicle we use. I'm thinking a GN for in our Malibu?

Hopefully, we can keep DS RF till his 2 birthday. :( *sigh My son is a big boy.

The APEX doesn't feel flimsy to me. My DN is 7 y/o (81lbs, 4'4'') and he fits in it well as a BPB. My sister said "Holy cow, that thing is huge!"
LOL She's has no idea what a Regent is or looks like!:ROTFLMAO:

Did you raise the head rest all the way? There's another slot height under it.

My 4 year old fits in the second to top slots, and he's got plenty of room to grow!

Yes, I raised the head up. My DS is on the 3rd set. He has about 5" of torso growth to the top (4th set) of slots.

The 2nd set of slots were too low. My DS shoulders were way above them.

I'm so dissapointed that the slots are low in general. The 1st set are 9inches! *Sigh A child that small should be RF. That is a peanut baby!

My DS is just a big boy at 17months old he's 29lbs & 33". He did slow down a ton in the past year or so. He's gained about 8lbs.

He hit 20lbs at 3 months for the love of Pete! lol

For the record (most people think DH and I are big) I'm 5'4" 125lbs, DH 5'10" 190lbs.
