honda crv safety

we are so undecided about what to do.

we need a cargo space that we can use when we want to go camping once/twice a year but do not want to buy a mininvan because of petrol consumption and price and use (only have two kids - onw who will leave home in 4-5 years and a soon to be teenager).

so thought of buying a crv which has decent cargo size but not sure about the safety. drove one- have never driven a srv/crv before but did not feel safe - found it too high and uncomfortable when compared to the mini van that I drove.

so we thought we should just buy a sedan and hire a minivan when we need it! but that seems so silly?

have you faced similar decision and what did you do?

maybe we are so in it that we cannot see the wood from the trees.

any help would be welcome.

thks

The 2005 CR-V is a very safe choice for an SUV. It has all-around great crash test results and has side curtain airbags and stability control all standard. Consumer Reports just gave it a very good rating in the latest issue, for what that's worth. Other than a Ford Escape hybrid, you probably won't find anything much larger with significantly better fuel economy.

thank you

Hi Darren,

Thank you for taking the time out to respond.

We have been doing quite a bit of research and have found that there is the Estima Hybrid minivan that Toyota have launched in Japan and chances are that in the next 2-3 years they will launch hybrid mini vans here too if the gas prices continue to climb any higher. The prices of mini vans especially used ones will probably then go down so maybe we will decide to buy one then.

In the meantime, we have decided to buy a basic Honda Civic (need a more reliable car than our current car anyway). We will buy a roof carrier for camping and or trailer.

In the present time of high gas prices and the US economy not growing much, we need to wait and see what happens. Have heard from some sources that the price of oil may even double as the value of paper money decline and commodity prices go up.

Any insights on the roof carrier/ trailer option would be appreciated or any comments on what I have said are also welcome. Maybe there is another point of view.

bugsbunny.
