Leather seats and shelf liner

So, we all know that shelf liner melts or sticks to leather seats :(.

I was thinking what about those little felt pads like you stick to the inside of drawers to keep them from banging????

WDYT:)

We have very hot, humid summers, and I've never had the shelf liner stick or melt to our leather seats in the 3 years that I have used them so far.

Not sure about the felt pads.

It get's hot in PA mostly in July and August. I have cloth seats in my vehicles. I had heard people complain that the shelf liner melts. Wasn't sure.

Me neither. Maybe it depends what kind? The stuff I buy is on a roll in Target. Sometimes when you remove a seat, it looks like there is an imprint in the pattern of the shelf liner, but it disappears when I wipe the seat down.

I've not used shelf liner so can't comment on the melting/not melting issue.
But, about that felt stuff. I'm not seeing how that would help grip any. Seems it would slip on that leather even more. I just don't think it would serve the same purpose KWIM?

I have always heard that they melt but I would think it would be more of a chemical reaction. I have had other rubber stuff 'melt' when it became all smeary (not a work) and made a mess.

I'm also in PA and have leather seats. The shelf liner did stick to my seats and I had a heck of a time getting it off. This was just the rubber liner with holes in it, don't know if that makes a difference.

Honestly, other than installation issues, I personally find it pointless to use anything at all.

We only use it for installation issues or for the random person who feels they need something on their leather seats to protect them. We were using something other than the liner w/ the holes to try it out and I was told that that stuff does melt so I'm assuming it just depends on the kind, we always use the holey one now. :)

Why would you use shelf liner at all, though? I only used it one time for a couple who had driven all over town looking for it and really wanted their effortful search to have meant something. Otherwise, I've never bought any, used any, needed any...

shelf liner just seems to me like a big fat contradiction. i mean, we're told that anything "grippy" is bad because it may give the illusion of a secure installation. that's exactly what shelf liner does. a thin towel, on the other hand, doesn't contribute to the false sense of a tight installation, and protects the seat even better (no holes for crumbs and juice to spill through :) ).

I'm glad to hear that, Becky. Too many times I've seen it be used like it was necessary for all installations, with no though to it's real 'purpose' at all: Little tiny squares of it, smaller than the base of the carseat, on cloth seats! What a waste of rubber that is :p

I've only used it on leather seats and it's usually just added when the parent wants something under their seat. They generally come in w/ seat protectors that I mention aren't a good idea, but they insist on something and this is the lesser of 2 evils.

I've heard a lot of people wanting to use something to "protect" the their leather seats and I just don't get it. Matt insisted on it and a local tech suggested the liner that I used (this was a while ago, mind you - like Becky said - it's no longer recommended). The liner did absolutely nothing to help the install. Matt just though it would protect the seats. I think it's pretty funny, actually. The indentations on my leather seats pop out much faster than any car we've had with cloth seats. Not to mention, the leather is SO much easier to keep clean.

We had leather in Franken Caddy, and it was not difficult to clean at all. And the seats were really squishy, so the dents from Joy's RA were pretty deep. They still popped out within a week.
