"Doctors recommend that infant car seats should be modified "so that head flexion is unlikely," which could decrease the "risk of apparent life threatening events," said study author Dr. Shirley Tonkin, a general practitioner associated with the New Zealand Cot Death Association."

 I understand what he was saying, but I can see some 'creative' parents taking this as a personal challenge to modify their existing car seats. Like I said,

I took that as in modifing (ie. pool noodle, rolled towel) the angle at which the seat is installed at because of the bit before they said that. I am also thinking that they are talking about using the carseats while in the vehicles not in the house or just because.

"Though this is the first study looking at infant position in car seats and death risk, the AAP has been recommending that "infants should ride at a 45 degree angle to prevent slumping and airway obstruction," according to a 2002 policy statement.

Doctors recommend that infant car seats should be modified "so that head flexion is unlikely," which could decrease the "risk of apparent life threatening events,"

I don't like how that article was written at all. It suggests that carseats are unsafe, and aren't designed to be at 45 degree angles, so they should be modified by the manufacturer. That's what I took it as anyway. Really they should have just stressed the importance of a proper fitting and installed seat. Another reason I think buckets are great for newborns- they fit better than in convertibles.

ETA: The article starts out by telling a story of a parent forgetting their child in the car and leaving them there. Who does that? That story wasn't all that revelant to the article IMO.

Quite a few parents. We just had a pretty revealing discussion about that very same issue quite recently.

"In the meantime, until the design of car seats changes, parents should be watchful of infants sleeping in car seats. "

UMMMM... aren't they already designed to be installed at a 45 degree?

They are designed to be installed at 45' but that doesn't mean that they are and because every vehicle is different installing at that angle can sometimes be a bit more difficult then putting it in and buckling the seat. I have seen many seats that are installed too upright for small babies.
