The Alabama Head Injury Foundation's carseat program for low income families has been officially launched!

web article

As a result of Alabama Legislature (Act 2006-623), a portion of the fines collected from improperly restrained children will be used to provide carseats to the state’s most needy.

The Alabama Head Injury Foundation (AHIF) is coordinating with projects in Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Anniston to provide seats to parents with limited incomes.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Car Seat Program or would like to contribute to this project, please contact Sandy Koplon at (205) 823-3818, 1-800-433-8002, or email sandykoplon at bellsouth dot net.

Section (e) of Alabama Legislature Act 2006-623

"(e) Fifteen dollars ($15) of a fine imposed under subsection (d) shall be used to distribute vouchers for size appropriate child passenger restraint systems to families of limited income in the state. The fifteen dollars ($15) shall be deposited in the State Treasury to be distributed by the State Comptroller to the Alabama Head Injury Foundation, which shall administer the program free of charge. The Department of Examiners of Public Accounts shall annually audit, review, and otherwise investigate the receipts and disbursements of these funds by the foundation in the same manner and to the same extent as the department performs examinations and audits of agencies and departments of the State of Alabama.

That is great! We have a similar program in our county. If you get pulled over and cited for no child resratint you not only have to go to a class and pay a fine, but you also have to buy a car seat and donate it to the local FD.

dang! that is even better than ours! You can actually fight the fine :( and often times they end up letting them go if they promise to have their seat checked.

These people don't have seats at all. No way to fight that fine. It is just a county thing. They said they are not supposed to pull over someoneone just for a unrestrained child. That kind of sucks.
