Washing Harness

I have a fellow member on another board who ask this:

"I was on another site and it was mentioned that you should never wash your harness belts in your car seat, that it compromises their safety features. Is this true? Obviously, you wouldn't want to put them in the dryer, but wouldn't washing them in the washing machine be OK?"

So tech's what should I say...

I'm not a tech, but I think I would say something like, "It might be okay, but I wouldn't want to take the risk that chemicals in the detergent or the agitation of the washing machine could compromise the integrity of the harness fibers."

Again, maybe it would be fine. I wouldn't want to take that risk, though. :)

Yes, that is correct. You NEVER want to submerg the harness in water or other chemicals. NEVER put in a wash or dryer. The chemicals can break down the webbing in the harness causing it to fail.

EVERY owner manual has cleaning and care information in it. She needs to follow those instrucion as they were set by the manufacturer for a reason.

If she needs to clean the harness baby wipes work great. If they are smelly from spit up then she could mix some baking soda and water and use a wash cloth or soft toothbrush to clean it. Then set it in the sun to dry. If it is really bad I would suggest buying a new harnes from the manufacturer if you can't get it clean.

The other problem with the washing machine is that it will stretch the harness, particularly with the kind of washing machines that have agitators in the middle. (I know, I've done it!)

The harness gets wrapped around the agitator during the washing process, and then the whole thing spins very fast during the rinse cycle (yes, even on "delicate"). It puts way too much stress on the harness.
