Swivel and Go question

We just bought a New Chrysler Town and Country 08 a month ago. It has the swivel and go, so the middle two bucket seats can turn around backwards. Can I put a carseat in these two seats, and then turn it around? Is this sufficient for rear-facing, if the child is over 1? Or not? The dealer couldn't answer this and neither could the police in our area because it is a new concept. I just want to know safety wise what the answer would be... thank you!

No, you cannot do that. Your carseat manual should state that the carseats cannot be installed in rearfacing or side facing seats.

I will look, but do you know the reasoning for it? Why is it not the same as rear facing?

Congrats on your new van. :) The Swivel and Go seats can only be used in the forward facing position with any child restraints installed upon them per the disclaimer on the van manufacturer's website and in the van's owner's manual. The manuals for all currently U.S. certified child restraints also prohibit installing child restraints on vehicle seats facing any direction except the front of the vehicle. Hold the thought of using the Swivel and Go seats facing rearward for those occasions where you have adults riding in them, or for any children who are capable of passing the 5-step test to forgo using a booster seat and properly fit the van's seatbelts.

Thanks for those. They are interesting and answer the question. It seems testing just isn't done enough to make it safe. Logically it seems since they are rf they would be safer but I understand the concerns as well. Just wasn't sure! Thanks again.

I just wanted to point out that convertibles these days allow children to RF up to 30 - 35lbs which gets most kids to a minimum of age 2 years old. You are *not* required to turn them just because they turn 1 yo. :)

We have the same van and love it. :)

I understand that and want to keep rearfacing which is why I was hoping turning the seat would suffice as well. But I'm thinking that won't work so we'll just keep rf in the normal seat. :) Thanks!
