Glad we're off Ezboard

Ezboard had a massive hacker attack the other day. They apparently wiped a large majority of messages from many forums, including backups.

The boards have had been barely working for a couple days and ezboard doesn't know if it will be able to restore many forums at all. Hard to believe any high volume forums still use ezboard when faster, more reliable alternatives are half the cost or even less.

A bunch of profiles got hacked and were used to post disgusting stuff on the forums. Then the hacker had the nerve to come post back saying "Hi everyone! I'm the hacker!"

Jim had to close the forum for a day to clean it all up, and something like 2500 members were deleted and the regulars are slowly being reinstated. It was a mess.

Darren--my Nov. group uses ezboard, and it has been a true nightmare...

What are some other options out there? None of us are very techno savvy, and I don't know that any of us can host the board themselves....We have lost over two years worth of posts, and don't know if we'll get them back or not. We're up again, kind of....

We moved a couple years ago when ezboard had all sorts of slowdowns and offline issues.

You basically need 3 things:

1) Internet savvy person

2) Website hosting provider

3) Forum software

You can find free software. http://www.ikonboard.com/ and http://www.phpbb.com/ seem to be the two popular ones.

Hosting will vary depending on how much disk space you need. A forum like this one uses roughly 100MB disk space and 1GB bandwidth a month. That would cost you $12 to $36 a year at a low cost provider, basically a couple dollars per month.

For extra fees, some providers and some forum software companies will do all the initial setup for you, or at least guide you through the process.

Thanks so much Darren!

With what we're paying Ezboard as a Gold Community, it is definitely something to look into! :)
