I am expecting my 2nd child any day now and I have a 5 year old. I am not sure where I am supposed to put this second car seat in my mini-van. Do I use the two captains chairs in the standard position, or move one of the chairs into the center of the vehicle? I don't want to put them on the third row bench, as it is so far away.

I would appreciate any advice! :)

You can do what is most convenient for you. Personally, we move our seats around all the time in our Odyssey...sometimes I have to keep the captain's chairs separated for my own sanity (one kid in each seat, just like you), but sometimes they can sit together peacefully so I slide the passenger seat toward the middle....and for you, your 5 yo might be a big help sitting next to the baby, so putting the seats together might be a great choice. Is the 5 yo in a booster? If so, it's easy to pop it in the third row when YOU want to sit next to the baby and dad is driving. Does the 5 yo go to school? If you have a "dropoff line" you would probably find it easiest to put the 5 yo on the passenger side.

As for a newborn/reafacing seat, I always found it easiest to put that seat behind the driver. There's not much you can do for a crying infant but safely pull over, so putting the baby in the middle or passenger side wasn't easiest for ME.

Fortunately seats are so easy to install in the Ody, you can change your mind almost daily with very little hassle, lol.

Where-ever the seats are installed securely & is convenient for you is best ;) Most people I see with 2 kids have them both sitting in the middle-row captain chairs, but I've known some families with kids who have behavior problems & they find that although the back is farther away, the kids are safer & happier being separated - the smaller one being safer from the older one's behavior issues ... but this is mostly in foster families where kids have attachment disorders anyway - an otherwise emotionally healthy kid is usually able to cope with the addition of a new family member just fine without endangering the newborn!

If the 5 yo is in a booster I would put that child in the second row center position, and put the baby outboard behind the driver. THe rfing child is the most protected passenger in the car followed by FFIng children in 5 point harnesses, followed by children in boosters. I have a SIenna, and three children. My oldest is just about 5 years old, and is in a harnessed seat in an outboard position in the third row. (I'd put her in the middle, but most days Ihave one or two of my nieces/nephew with me, and the only way I can fit two boosters in the third row with her wizard is if it is in an outboard position. ) I put her in the back because she buckles and unbuckles herself, and it is just ewasier than having my middle child back there, who wouldn't help unbuckle herself if her life depended on it-lol!). My 3 year old is FFing in the second row center in a harnessed seat, and my 10 month old is RFing in the second row behind the passenger seat.
