You can't be sure that there's no damage. There could be unseen damage. You should always follow the manufacturer's recommendation for replacement. If you post what brand your seat is, I can look up the toll free customer service number, so you can call them to ask what they recommend in your situation.

It depends on the accident, but generally yes -- there can be unseen damage (hairline fractures to the shell)....I think that is a few years old & I remember a more recent easier to read link, but can't find it at the moment.

My experience is this: I'd had a minor accident, continued to use the seat, then a year later a child passenger safety tech said it should have been replaced with the cost covered by the insurance compay; I called the insurance company asking them to cover the cost of a replacement seat - even a year later - they didn't want to, but I convinced them I found it to be poor customer service that they did not tell me of this policy when the accident happened; with that & the pressure of the advice from the child passenger safety tech they sent me a check for the average amount of car seat replacement so I could afford a new seat.

Carseats and 1999 Nissan Maximas

I am attempting to put a Cosco convertible carseat in my 1999 Nissan Maxima. The seatbelt system in my car is lap/shoulder so therefore I cannot secure the seat with just a lap belt, I have to use the hooks that came in my car. The downside to that is that the location of the hooks make it to where the belt that came with the seat go from the back of the carseat, across the seat of the Maxima and attach to the hooks. This secures the seat in place but I can no longet sit in the back seat with my 9 month old. Any suggestions? Henri Rabalais

Your '99 doesn't have LATCH anchors, I'm 99% sure--you should be installing with the lap/shoulderbelt or a lapbelt (if your vehicle has any position that is only a lapbelt).

It sounds like you're talking about your top tether anchor hooks in the rear window deck. Any forward-facing carseat should have it's top tether strap hooked to a top tether anchor. The lower portion of the seat should be installed with the vehicle seatbelt.

Your seat is rear-facing for a 9 month old, though. It should only be installed with the vehicle seatbelt, through the rear-facing belt path (located underneath the seating portion of the carseat). It will not be solid at the top of the carseat shell, it will only be tight at the seatbelt path. This is normal.
