A WWYD Car Seat Question...

DH has a 1993 Ford Explorer. No LATCH, and no tether anchors. We took the truck to Ford to have them install the tether anchors. They were not able to install them because the floorboards of the truck are too rusted to hold the anchors. The guy said he could see through the floor to the street below.

I didn't actually see the damage, I'm only going by what Ford told me. But I'm thinking now that if the floorboards are that damaged, does it affect the safety of the vehicle seat? Should I continue to allow Kira to ride in the back seat? Are the vehicle seats bolted to the frame of the car, or just to the floor boards? Without any other information, would you feel comfortable allowing anyone (especially your children who are strapped to the seat) to ride in the back seat of the truck?

We can't afford a new vehicle right now, so the alternative is to share my van whenever the kids need to go anywhere. DH usually takes Kira to day care in the mornings, 3 days a week, in his truck. They ride in the van any other time.

What are your opinions?

I think it might be wise to get a second opinion and to verify that the floorboards are structurely sound. I would be a little afraid to go in a vehicle that had the floorboard rusted all the way through. If there is rust on the floorboard, then what else is rusted out. Hopefully they can tell you if the seats are actually bolted to the frame or just the floorboard.

Kinda scary knowing that Kira has been riding in his truck several times a week for more than 2 years. My dad said he would take a look at it this weekend to see if there's damage where the vehicle seat is bolted in. Or I might call the guy at Ford that tried to put in the tether anchors.

*sigh* It will just be so inconvenient to only have 1 vehicle that the kids can ride in. (But of course, their safety is WAY more important than my inconveniences.)

Besides structural safety, if there are holes in the floor, I would also be concerned about exhaust (carbon monoxide) leaking into the cab.

Good luck.
