80% rule and center humps

I tried a center install in my Outback again today to test something that I had been wondering. Even if I had been able to get an acceptably tight install (which I wasn't), there's a gap under the base on both sides. Generally I think about the front end hanging off the edge or sides in very narrow pick-up jump seat (ff, of course). What do you think about a gap on the side when installed on a bench seat?

There's at least 3 inches up most of the sides, and there was more than enough room for my hand (and I'd say more than 10% on either side).

The contour of the base actually looks made for this vehicle, except for the gap on the sides.

It didn't seem to be an issue ff as the base is toward the front of the vehicle seat and the hump isn't as pronounced there. There was only a small gap toward the back of the sides, not the full length of the base. Thinking about a Radian, where the base is toward the back of the vehicle seat, it probably would pose more of a problem- even with the more narrow base.

Good question.

I have no idea. I'm thinking it would more of a concern for side-impact crashes than front-impact, yk?

You can't just compress that puppy a bit more? :D

Crunchier.....when I used to install my DC in the center of my '02 Subaru Outback, I would kneel on that seat with both knees- rock it side to side and the DC would leave an impression in the center hump-as well as along the sides of the hump-that's how tight I would get it. (using the DC's FF lock-offs) It didn't have the same problem your photo shows. We also have leather, and the hump size looks the same.

I have a question. I was reading Crunchiers post and she had mentioned something about infant bases going past the edge of the seat. Are there any laws regarding a limit on how far past the edge of the seat the base can be? Thank you.

maybe, but there's already a lot of me kneeling on it. :p

I looked in the manual today. Now I'm not sure if it matters.

Does at least 80% of the CR base (footprint) fit on
the vehicle seat? No more than 20% of the CR can
hang over the front edge of the vehicle seat.

and

According to CR manufacturers, a CR must have
80% of the base supported by the vehicle seat with
no more than a 20% hangover on the front edge of
the vehicle seat.

both clearly say front edge, though I was under the impression that it was either edge.
