Hi buying a new mini van and wondering if side curtain airbags are safe with the use of carseats? One newborn one 18mos old? Thanks for the help.

This thread has some info on minivans without airbags for families with kids in carseats....
But, I believe I remember that carseats are fine in seats with side-airbags ~ the danger being when a carseat is installed {especially rear facing} in a seat with a frontal airbag.

In general, side airbags pose no risk to properly restrained passengers. There was some concern about older vehicles with side torso airbags that may have posed a threat to occupants who were unrestrained or out of position (i.e. sleeping on the door).
New vehicles meet a wide range of voluntary standards and in most cases side airbags, especially curtain airbags, will provide a benefit to properly restrained adults and children.
That said, the vehicle manufacturers are the ones who must determine if their airbag systems are appropriate for use with all passengers so be sure to read the vehicle owner's manual. Some child restraint owner's manuals also prohibit use near an active airbag, but hopefully these restrictions will be removed in future models.
My next vehicle will certainly have side curtain airbags in all rows of seating. Side impacts are the most deadly crashed for properly restrained passengers.

what is special about the curtain? i'm looking at the 2005 odyssey, with side airbags but no side curtains. i've got two in carseats (5 point harnessed britax) at 6&2, and then a VERY small 12 year old and an average 14 year old.

From what I understand, the side curtains provide exceptional impact protection for the occupants' heads. Head injuries are the most lethal. Regular side airbags are lower than the curtains, and although they do help in lateral crashes, they don't necessarily provide adequate impact protection for the head. This is where side curtains come in.

I haven't seen a list like that, but I'm sure that once you've got a few vehciles in mind, you'll find the info on their websites or simply by calling a dealer....
2005 Odyssey models have side curtain airbags standard in all models for all three rows.
