Jackson is chewing his HUGS on the regent to pieces.

In the last three months, we have ordered two new sets of HUGS and I am on my last undamaged set and there are already little teeth marks in the corners. His need for oral input has quadrupled for some odd reason. He is chewing holes in his sleeves, and collars. Chews constanly on his fingers. Has chew tubes and other oral stimulaters. Has started chewing on the spines of paperback books...

We have tried diversionary tactics, getting on to him, reasoning with him, giving him something else to chew on.....nothing, apparently britax hugs are great for stimulation.

SO anyway, I am hoping (praying) this is a stage, so what should I do in the mean time...

-Order a cheap seat? (Not sounding like a bad idea after $26 for hugs already)

-TRY to go only places with someone else to watch him?

-Keep ordering HUGS except order multiple sets at a time.

They make a product to keep animals from chewing on stuff....I wonder if it is safe for people. It is called bitter apple. It is supposed to taste nasty!!

Could you keep one that he's already chewed on hand for him to chew and leave the ones on the seat alone?

Well, the problem is he is chewing them to pieces and swallowing the pieces. I am not sure that is good for you.....?

I've tasted it  (I was working at a Petco,) it is bitter. Bitter enough to only do it once. But aside from the safe for huumans factor, or the too mean factor, I don't know how well it would stick/stay on the rubber hugs.

Maybe worth a try though. It did not kill or harm me at all. ;)

Not sure that I'd use it on my kids though.

Personally, without an alternative, I'd use parental discretion and take the HUGS off. I know they are required as per Britax, but I wonder what Britax would say if they knew your situation? And even if they don't give you permission, obviously this is a choking hazard if not an expensive predicament. No other seats on the market have the HUGS, I know the purpose is to help reduce forward movement ( I think?) BUT clearly you can't keep buying more HUGS......I wish I knew the magic answer. The bitter stuff may work, BUT then again, my son bit his nails regardless of how much of that we put on them:(. It's worth a try.

I know, I know.....I keep say to myself, WHY WHY WHY....

I like the regent for what it is but those hugs (the hugeness)...

Thats why I was thinking about getting something cheaper in the mean time.

I am not sure I would be confortable without the HUGS as it is such a very large seat and is sure to have plenty of forward movement. I could give Britax a call but really what can I expect them to say....sigh...

I thought more about the red pepper and really don't want that to get in his eyes and feel bad for considering the other. He doesn't understand and has such low body awarness he doesn't know he is doing it most of the time.

I think I would buy another Triumph Advance since he fits in it so well - and no hugs! You can always use it for a backup for Camille then, or sell it when he gets past the oral phase and can go back into the regent. Good luck.

I tasted it when I was working for a vet. I also tasted pet tooth paste. I wouldn't do either again (lol)

I wonder if you could put a baby sock over them? I dont know if that is safe, so techs please chime in.

At least he would have to struggle to get to the hugs.

Arly, can I ask you something?

How many seats do you have? Or have you had?

I seem to remember you having ALOT...lol

I have two seats right now, just two.

All were sold as i was really just hunting for a seat that met all our needs (is there such a thing?) I can tell you with certainty there are no perfect carseats out there. There is always a compromise.

How many have I had in the past? hmmmmm.....20 have passed through my hands if you count the two I have now.

As for the socks on the hugs, he would just chew them too. We are talking about a child that chewed holes in the harness pads. (Yeah, I need to replace those) He does not mind weird textures AT ALL. He is a tactile seeker.

Does he have P's and Q's? My kids love those! I got a set when my middle was going through an oral phase and now all of them love to chew on them. The problem there is probably that he would drop them? HUGS are so darn accessable and can't be dropped. I really wish Britax would have IMMI make a wider harness for them and get rid of the HUGS, I don't like them.

I just looked the Ps and Qs up. I will have to order a set. We have the hollow Chew Tubes and the Z-Vibe. We give him those but he will chew on anything that is acessable and like you said, those hugs are right there in the perfect spot.
