There should be specific cleaning instructions in the carseat manual. Check there first!
Most of us have a few "horror stories" of things that we've done before we knew better. That's why the number one thing we, as techs, can stress is to read the carseat manual! 
The heat can damage the fibers, so it's not a great idea. Most (okay, all) carseat manuals should have a section on care and cleaning; it's best to follow the advice given.
Don't stress about not knowing--I had machine-washed our Alpha Omega's straps quite a few times before finding out how bad it was.
