    Broken collarbone

My 3 year old fell and broke her collarbone. She is 27 pounds and I still have her in a rear facing car seat (Grace 4ever). I am just wondering the safest way to buckle her in without putting too much pressure on her collarbone. On the way back from the hospital, we loosened the 5 point harness so it wasn’t pressing on her, but I’m wondering if there’s a safer way.

    Re: Broken collarbone

    Hi there.

You still need to tighten the harness so that it passes the pinch test. I know it won't be comfortable for her. Test, obviously, on the non broken side as best you can, taking any swelling into account on the broken side. But tighten the harness slowly as you approach tight. And once you hit the pinch test, don't go tighter. Not a single millimeter. I don't know if you were tightening to the pinch test or beyond before, but all you need is the pinch test. It's tight enough, and many parents go beyond thinking tighter is better.
