Question Growing Boy

Hello. My 2 1/2 you son is 35 lbs and 38 inches tall. His current carseat is forward facing (since he turned 2) as he has a long torso and legs. I noticed that the shoulder straps are below his shoulders and must come up and around, I would obviously move the straps up if there was a higher position available in the current car seat but there is not. I mentioned it to his pediatrician, as the car seat states the baby can use the seat up to 40lbs. But my gut was correct, the pediatrician said he needs a larger seat because shoulder straps that come from below the shoulder allow too much 'give' if an accident occurs likely resulting in an injury to the child that could have been prevented. Question: what's the safest and most economical carseat out there for a lengthy young lad like my son? Again, he is 2 1/2, so he will only get bigger. I prefer a seat that will last a few years. Thanks!

Hello,
What seat is your child currently in? What is his seated shoulder height (sit him cross-legged against the wall and measure top of shoulder to floor)? What vehicle(s) do you have? What does he weigh?

If he's in a Scenera Next or Apt, you may find that he still fits rear-facing despite having outgrown the seat forward facing. If so that's a safe choice while shopping. (Your child doesn't HAVE to forward-face at 2 if he fits rear-facing still.) If not, you're correct, and should replace the seat immediately.

The Graco Tranzitions/Wayz, Graco Atlas, Harmony Defender, Cosco Finale, Evenflo Maestro, even Evenflo SureRide may be good budget choices based on his stats and your vehicle. With more info we can help you narrow it down.

I just wanted to add that the reason he may still fit rear facing is that when rear facing the straps should come from at or BELOW shoulder level! :) You probably already know that but it doesn't hurt to double-check. :)
