Flying to Canada on 787-9 and 777 from Switzerland - 8,5 hour flight

I'm hoping for some advice since I'm really confused about what to do:

I have a 21 month old, 85cm, 12kg, that I would like to have in a car seat on the flight and in a rental car in Canada.

From what I understand, I have two options. I can buy and use the CARES system on the flight to canada, but then I'll need to figure out a carseat in Canada. In which case, I'd like to be able to use it on the flight home. Most of the car seats I've seen on bestbuy.ca say they're certified for airline use, but they are big. Most are more than 45cm wide and I have no idea how to find out which will fit on the flight. Do we need to buy a premium economy seat for the carseat to fit?

There's another option of buying a carseat that I can buy here "Britax Römer Eclipse" with a 43cm width that will work on the airplane. From what I understand, I cannot use this seat as soon as we get to Canada and it's only got a 3-point harness. I would prefer a rear-facing seat in the car. So this car seat ensures we end up with two car seats on the flight home.

So, does anyone have any tips?

I'm sorry we missed your post! For a 21 month old, I would use the carseat you're currently using on the plane and in the vehicle on your trip. What are you using right now?

Using an EU carseat on the plane is going to be very airline-dependent so the best thing to do is to look on their website or give them a call to find out what their policy is. Your child won't be very comfortable in the CARES because s/he won't be able to sleep comfortably. The width that is given for airline seats is right at the armrests which will only matter if you are seated in bulkhead seats and won't be able to raise them. I haven't heard of anyone having issues with any carseats on regular airplane seats. One thing you may run into on long haul planes is inflatable seat belts and you can't install carseats with those. You will know them when you see them.
