When my new 13 year old sit in the front seat my airbag off sensor is triggered. Child is about 87#. I know if a child must sit in the front seat under age 12 they're to be moved as far back from an airbag as possible, but what happens when there's no airbag and a 13 year old?? I've been making the child sit in the regular rear seat, but child is desperate to finally have reached the point in life to be able to sit in the front. What's the right move?? Aside from child wanting to sit in the front there is no need for a child to be there.

Do you have a VW/Audi by any chance, out of curiosity?

Does your child pass the five step test?

Sitting further back, and weighing enough to trigger the airbag are polar opposites. :) Sitting further back is what we have kids whose skeletons are too young to take the force of the airbag that WILL go off (mostly because they must sit in the front for whatever reason, but are super young). You have a child who doesn't weigh enough to trigger the airbag at all, but is old enough now to handle it. We want the airbag to go off in front of that child, ideally. But, at 87 pounds, they don't weigh enough. Moving them back won't help (but putting them in the back does, you're very much on the right track there, to their disappointment) other than to miss the dash all together, which is good. There's just no airbag up front to meet this child. They're too light.

Close, but doesn't 5 step on the abdomen belt part--uses an incognito currently in the back position. Nearly 5 feet, but slender ;-)
