Items in Cargo

Does anyone have suggestions for how to store stuff in the cargo area when it’s iust a big open space? I want something like a big plastic tote with a lid but I know that would be a major projectile. I don’t want just a big Costco bag because everything would probably fall out and be a mess, and be individual projectiles. I keep things in our car such as jumper cables, first aid kit, bottles of water, blankets, rope, bug and bear spray, etc.
Would a tote maybe work if I somehow wrapped a bungy cord around it and hooked it to the floor?

The ideal solution is to keep things in a sturdy bin that is connected to cargo hooks with ratcheting straps (not bungee cords, which stretch, and break when their capacity is exceeded, which is likely to happen when subject to crash forces). However many people choose to compromise and use a less-than-ideal solution. Your vehicle manual probably cautions against stacking cargo above the level of the seat backs, which is good packing advice for limiting cargo projectile potential in many crashes. Other general guidelines include putting heavy things on the bottom, lighter on top; heavy things closer to the seat backs; etc.
