Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how blow molded carseats like the Graco tranzitions are made.

Thanks!

Hi there.

The plastic beads are heated and melted, and pushed through molds, then the pieces are put together at the seams. Then you've got the shell of the seat, and from there the harness, cover, and all other pieces are added.

Did you have a specific question or concern with which we could help?

I am doing a project for college where I am attempting to design a more sustainable car seat. I know that a blow molded car seat usually does not have EPS or EPP which helps to limit those types of plastics. Designing a blow molded seat potentially uses less plastic and making the seat a little more sustainable.

Meh, even seats with lots of EPP or EPS foam are going to be less than 5% by weight of those types of plastics compared to a seat without them. I’m not sure eliminating EPP/EPS foam is something that would make car seats more sustainable. I suppose it would make a seat less likely to receive accidental damage requiring replacement of the foam and/or the entire car seat.

You should check out the yet-to-be-released Wayb Pico Travel Car Seat. They are attempting to create a seat with very minimal plastic. It has an aluminum frame. As designed it has very limited range for being useful and is incredible expensive for the size range of kids it will fit, but it is definitely something new and unique.

Yeah, I have checked out the Waby Pico. I am looking to design a more 'typical' looking car seat that is also more versatile than the Pico.
