1978 trucks and carseats

My husband is really wanting to buy a 1978 (or around there) truck as our second vehicle. We have a Dodge grand caravan as our only vehicle now. We have an 11 month old and a 2 1/2 year old, both rear facing. I'm thinking that even in an extended cab rear facing won't fit (or be safe). Would you just keep your kids from riding in it? I'm thinking of telling him not to bother getting one with a back seat. Forward facing wouldn't have the latch system needed and it'll be so long before they are out of harnesses.

You could rear face them until booster maturity, assuming it has shoulder belts.

Otherwise, no, I wouldn't let them ride it. Course, I'd also have issues with my husband riding in it as well, but he's at least an adult and can make that choice on his own.

I wouldn't want anyone in it until the belts were replaced, in addition to what Wendy says.

In some vehicles you can retrofit a tether anchor (it is the only needed part of the LATCH system; lower anchors are a convenience feature.) It would be tough in many trucks that age though, but getting a truck with a back seat would make it more likely that it could be done, which might provide more options.
