Re: car seat for 2000 Chevy Chevrolet

Looking at purchasing the Graco 4ever rear facing car seat. I have an older car (2000 Chevy Chevrolet) that does not have a latch system. I've read the manual but it does not provide significant information about what type of seatbelt (locking latch plate or switchable retracter) it has. Is this car seat compatible with my car? Do I need to make any modifications to it/purchase adapters etc? Will I be able to use it when my child needs to be forward facing? Thanks for your help!

Hi there.

Not sure which Chevy you have, but many of that era had what they called cinching latchpates. Or the instructions in the carseat section in the manual would say to lift the latchplate and loosen the belt, which shows you've got a locking latchplate.

Another way to check is to see if the backseat ones look different from the driver's seatbelt. A driver's belt doesn't have a way to lock before a crash (since they're only there for carseat installation, and I really hope no one is installing in the driver's seat), so it's sliding. If the ones in the back look different, you likely have locking latchplates.

I don't know if you can get top tethers retrofitted for your car, or if your car has them already. That's vital for forward facing. If you don't have them, I'd encourage you to rear face to booster maturity. You may also have issues with backless boosters, depending on the height of any headrests, but that's about eight years old, so I'm not worried about it now.
