Anyone have any experience with CarMax?

We are considering purchasing a vehicle from our local CarMax. We would also like to sell/trade the two we currently own to them.

I don't know much about the company but everything we have read/seen seems positive so far.

My mom purchased 2 cars from Carmax. The process is pretty easy. I don't think she has sold a car there though. I would say they are like pretty much every other car dealership.

We have bought 4 vehicles there and don't look anywhere else now. Neither my husband nor I have patience for haggling. We may not always get the cheapest price, but we feel we've gotten a fair price. We think it's a fair tradeoff not to deal with a hard sell, the push to upsell, and the general runaround we've experienced at traditional dealerships.

We've not done any trade-ins there, and I've heard anecdotally their offers aren't great. We've either been replacing fairly old cars or ones that have been totaled in accidents so we haven't explored the trade-in option. For the two vehicles that weren't totaled, we donated one to charity and ended up selling the other one to a neighbor.

I found their prices to be VERY high. We got a good deal without really haggling at a local place, but did sell our car to CarMax. Their trade-in was the same as other places, and the used car place didn't want it.

It may depend on what you're looking for and when. We scored a real deal on one vehicle a few years ago when cars weren't selling well. We think they were discounting to move stock. But some makes/models did seem priced a bit high the last time we were looking.
