We have a '98 ford ranger with side facing rear seats and our son is 5 years old. Where is the safest place for him to ride in his booster seat?

The side-facing seats are not safe for any passengers. The safest place for your son would be in the front passenger seat. Make sure the seat is moved back as far as possible. If there is a switch to turn off the air bag, I would do that as well.
