Question Honda Odyssey 3rd Row 3 Seats Across

I currently have a 4 year old and two 2 year olds with a baby due in October. I am a bigger guy and need ample room to tighten the kids in the third row. Am I able to put 3 car seats across the third row of the Odyssey and remove one of the captain's chairs? If so, what brand and style? Has anyone done this successfully?

That should be doable.

What car seats do you already have? What is a comfortable budget? Are the 2 year olds forward facing or rear facing? What year is your Odyssey?

I don't have an Odyssey, I have a Grand Caravan. The Grand Caravan barely fits 2 in the 3rd row and I can only find one anchor point for the tether. The 2 year olds and 4 year old are all forward facing. All I know about the current car seats is that they are Evenflo brand and they seem very wide. If I find a vehicle and car seats that suit my needs, I would have no problem making all new purchases.

Oh, I misunderstood.

You're right that there is only one tether anchor back there. It IS possible to safely do 3 across in the 3rd row of a Caravan with kids the age/size of your kids, but it means rear facing the 2 year olds and loading them through the hatch. Then in a year or so, the oldest would need to be in a booster, the twins (are they twins?) could both forward face, and the baby would have to rear face in the 3rd row, until the twins were booster ready.

Let us know if you're interested in that option. It would mean 3 new car seats now, plus a couple of boosters down the line, but all of the required car seats could be under $100 each, most well under.

If you're really interested in an Odyssey, though, I highly recommend it! I have a 2013 and "only" 3 kids. If you get a 2011 or later (they haven't changed the basic body design, including seats, since then), there is a tether anchor for every rear seating position, plus plenty of really usable lower anchors. And the 3rd row is way wider and less finicky than the Grand Caravan's.

For 3 forward facing harnessed seats across the 3rd row of a 2011+ Odyssey, one option that I'm certain would work is an Evenflo Sureride in the center (is that what you have right now?) and a pair of Graco Tranzitions/Wayz (same seat/different retailers) outboard. Or, I suppose 2 Surerides outboard with a Tranzitions/Wayz in the center would technically work, but it would be pretty claustrophobic in the center. The Sureride is fairly wide, but sits up on a narrow base, while the Tranzitions is much lower profile, so it fits under/behind the Sureride.

I'm not interested in loading the kids through the hatch because we often have our dog back there, so that option is out.

The seat we have now is not a Sureride. I'm almost certain I'll be buying 4 new car seats.

Thanks for all this info. We'll be looking at the Odyssey to see if we like it this month. My focus is on the car seats. We are always on the go with the kids and I need something manageable for getting them in and out. I also want a set up that won't be too horrendous to install because I want it done properly.

The Odyssey is a great choice for multiple car seats because of all the tether anchors. There are so many options.

Best of luck to you!

Another possibility with an Odyssey and 4 kids:

It's an 8 seater. You can remove a captain's chair, and still have 2 usable positions in the 2nd row. (The 2nd row center seat is a little finicky, but there are plenty of car seats that do work there.) If you like your current car seats, you could use all of them, forward facing (2 outboard 3rd row, plus one in a captain's chair) with the baby in the center 2nd row. That gives you less space in there, but it might still be enough.

I’m bumping this thread because I’m curious if anyone has tried the suggestion of the two Graco tranzitions/wayz and Evenflo sureride in the back row? I’m having a heck of a time trying to get three across in that third row of my 2015 and I’m worried the only option is diono’s.

Would love to know this as well. My 2013 only has 50" of space but even the smallest of seats at 17" x3 = 51" 😕
