Rocks and tires

Can running over rocks (1"-2") on blacktop pavement ruin tires? The neighborhood hoodlums have taken to throwing rocks in front of my house and I'm forever running over the darn things and it seems like it's going to ruin my tires. Sometimes the rocks crush, sometimes not. I think they're granite, some sandstone.

maybe, but not likely. an SUV/truck tire will not get damaged by rocks of that size, and most passenger car tires won't either. if they're really sharp, i supposed you could get a puncture, but i think it would be unlikely. larger rocks may cause damage, but i think ones of the size you mentioned would just cause a bit of a bump.

Oh good. The rocks used in landscaping in my city aren't the smooth, river rock kind; you certainly wouldn't want to walk on them barefoot. For now, I'll just keep kicking the ones I see in front of my driveway down in front of the punk's driveway. :evil grin:

Come drive in Saskatchewan :D . If your tires live through that, they'll live through anything. Small rocks that are around 1 - 2 inches shouldn't cause any trouble. We get rocks like that all over the highways where a gravel road meets up with it (or when highways does a gravel seal patch  new windshields every year up here!) and it doesn't seem to hurt the tires. Low speeds should in theory cause less stress, so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Oh yeah, gravel trucks around here are a dime a dozen. And they all have signs on them that say "NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGED WINDSHIELDS"--ha! Meantime half their loads are dropping off everytime they bounce over a crack in the road. At least we don't have any new construction around us so I don't have to worry about the nails any more .

The troubles with rocks up here are not usually coming off of gravel trucks (however I know someone who had a 4" rock go through his window  : missed him, no passengers), but ones that come flying up from the tires of vehicles from the opposite direction. They bruise up a windshield really fast. Nails can be a real kicker though.
