Question What next for DS with DS

My son Is 5.5yo, 40", 40lbs, and has Down syndrome. I just FF'd him because he's now 40lbs but both of my Radian XTSL are expiring the end of the year.
I'm hoping you'll give me some guidance on should I get another convertible or a combo harnessed booster?
We've gotten good use out of these Radians but it means I've been out of the car seat loop for a long time!

If you're going to keep him FF, I would look at combination seats though would probably consider the convertible Evenflo Sureride because of its price and its high harness height.

I haven't needed to shop for combination seats in a long time, so I don't have any specific recommendations there. But hopefully someone else will chime in.

I don't mind keeping him RF but it seemed like most of the convertible seats rf'd to 40lbs. I drive a VW golf so it can't be anything too ginormous.

Is the only difference between convertible and combo just that combo is ff only?

Combination seats are usable as belt positioning boosters; convertibles can be used rear facing. Either can be used FF with a harness.

If you want to keep him RF, you could look at the Graco Extend2Fit, or (my favorite) the 3-in-1 version of the Extend2Fit. (It can also be used as a booster, which makes it a 3-in-1, but there are other features it has that I like better than the plain convertible. Smoother harness adjuster and it allows the use of harness pads for forward facing.)

How mature? Could he booster soon or is he going to be harnessed for a long time due? If the plan is to harness for awhile, I'd get a britax frontier. I personally like the seats that are easier to use and have more features and stuff. I bought a few budget seats and hate them so much. If I had a kid who would be harnessed for more years, I'd spend the money on something easy.

The nautilus is cheaper and people like it.

No I wouldn't want him boostered yet, I'm thinking he'll be in a harness for another 2 years at least. He probably could do a booster but he's just so tiny!

Thank you for the recommendations! I'll check them out.

Thank you! I will check those out. He'll be fine FF even though he likes RF better. So I'll look into the combo seats.

Check out the Harmony Defender. Its kind of slim like the radians. For a budget seat I think it has a lot of nice features. Great harnessed seat and a great booster (when the time comes)
