What is the FAA rule for...

Someone asked if they have to bring a seat for their 2.5 year old when the fly on a plane next week. Of course I know the "right" answer is bring a seat b/c that's safest...but I'm wondering is a seat required?

The FAA has no rule that a carseat is required for any kids. You buy the seat for the child and they can either sit in the seat with the lapbelt or use a certified carseat. If the parents didn't buy a ticket for the child, then there is a chance no seats will be available and the seat will have to be gate checked.

Even though it isn't required, it really is best to use one in the plane. Why risk checking the seat as baggage and risk it getting broken or lost when you get to your destination. Children also do so much better when they are in a carseat on an airplane. They are more comfortable and they often sleep better in their familiar carseat. It also is safer as the carseat's 5point restraint will hold them in a lot better then an ill-fitting lapbelt if there was an accident.
