Do we need to use the seat belt positioning clip with Graco Nautilus as a backless?

My 8 y/o (4'5" and 69 lbs) has outgrown his Nautilus as a HBB (his shoulders touch the red shoulder belt guides at the maximum height), so I'm getting ready to convert it into a backless. I was reading the manual and it talks about how to use the seat belt positioning clip, but I can't tell if it is just an option (in case the seatbelt path is not on his shoulder) or if it must be used.

Thank you! It's working great. The seatbelt fits wonderfully on DS without the clip.

His shoulders are exactly at the edge of the backseat, though (captain chair, Mazda 5). Does this mean he needs a shorter booster? The seatbelt doesn't fit properly without the booster.

Is the seatbelt attached to the seat or the side of the car? Does he have support behind his head to the top of his ears?

The seatbelt is attached to the side of the car, and the headrest is adjustable, so it fits him well. I am just not sure if it'd be safer to get a shorter booster just so that his shoulders continue to be completely inside the backseat?

As long as the belt is coming from above his shoulders and he has that head support that's not an issue. :)
