Anyone used a car seat on Air NZ for a child over 2 years. The information on their web site seems to indicate that once a child is 2, you can't bring a car seat on the plane.

DS will be 3, but the size of a 2 year old. It's a 14+ hour flight - I really really want to take our car seat, not just for safety but also sanity reasons.
I'm going to call them and see what I can find out. I also thought of just turning up with the car seat and the car seat bag tucked away in the carry on, intending to take the seat on the plane, and see if anyone questions us. DS does look 2, but if they ask for his passport, they'll know his age.
Other airlines we could fly include QANTAS but they can be difficult with car seats too, have to get prior approval which isn't always recorded on your flight information, so they still may not let you use the seat.
We could fly United - but United is nearly 3x the cost. That would mean $3000 per adult, rather than $1200, and the connecting flight within Australia would be with Qantas, so again problem with the car seat.
Would you take a gamble on sneaking the seat on the plane with Air NZ, but knowing you may not be able to use it. Or would you pay the extra $3600 and fly United???
