Ireland to Canada with Westjet - what rf seat allowed?

I am travelling from Ireland to Canada with Westjet. I have a 14 month old 13.5kg /29 pound boy. As we are going to hire a car in Newfoundland I want to bring our RF car seat with me.

Originally I planned to just put the seat in the hold and keep the baby on my lap but after investigating safety I would like to use my seat onboard if possible. I think it would also be more comfortable for my son and ourselves as he is walking and the seat might help contain him....lol

Firstly, Westjet rules relate to Canadian and US car seats only.

We have an Axkid Minikid and a Joie Stages. Both of these are EU compliant but none of the stickers required by Westjet exist on the shell as they are not FAA/Canadian approved.

Does anyone have any idea of whether I could use either of these seats or if there is a European seat that I can definitely use onboard? I would be happy to invest in another seat for the trip. However, it is in four weeks so my ability to order a Canadian seat for delivery to Ireland is probably limited.

Secondly, this is probably a stupid question but is there any issue using a European seat in a Canadian rental car? I don't mean from a fitting perspective, more from a legal or insurance view. I will of course check with the rental company.

Apologies if this has already been asked but I did a search of previous posts and to be honest I'm just very confused.

There is a new advisory circular from Transport Canada for air travel. It mentions European seats. I'm not sure if all Canadian airlines must abide by this or if it is just a recommendation. http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviati...vices-referencecentre-acs-600-605-003-493.htm

Unfortunately, I don't think it is legal to use your European seat in a Canadian rental car. I don't know if there would be any insurance implication or if a police officer would actually give you a ticket.

I highly doubt a Westjet crew would give you grief over using a Euro seat. An Air Canada crew very likely would but unlikely with a WJ crew. Flying WJ is rather like going to Disney -- they actually value their customers and bend over backwards to make the experience good for the customer. Air Canada not so much.

I wouldn't worry about it. Re using the Euro seat in a rental car, for the most part as long as you are a tourist and using a seat legal in your country of residence, people (& police) won't care.

The few times I have flown westjet, they looked for the Canadian maple leaf CMVSS symbol on my seats before we boarded.

I would likely have your manual handy showing where your seat is aircraft approved.
