Flying with a 2 year old

My neighbor casually mentioned that she is flying in June with her 2 kids her almost three year old and her 11 month old. Her plan is to fly her daughter in her lap and her son in a seat and check both car seats.

I already explained the dangers of checking car seats, but she seemed unconvinced.

Can her average sized 2 year old...almost 3...fly without a car seat or CARES harness?

Can she? Yes, the airline won't stop her and there is no requirement by the FAA for children to be in car seats. Should she? Absolutely not, in my opinion.

I usually pitch it to people as this; you already bought a seat for the toddler, you're already lugging the car seat through the airport, why not just bring it on board so you have a way to contain the child? Otherwise you're going to have a kid that's climbing all over everyone and everything, potentially annoying other passengers, etc.

I told people my kids were angels on plane trips because of their car seats. We haven't taken many long trips, but they never ask to get up. They can't get out of their seat in a car, so they are similarly behaved in a plane.

Turbulences can hurt adults and can be worst to improperly restrained kids. Ask your friends to think again.

I told her all those things. I fly with my daughter (3 yrs) a couple times a year and I told her that having her in her car seat on the plane is much easier. She is comfortable in her familiar seat, can't mess with the buckles, stays still, etc.

I even offered her our Graco Tranzitions, but she still wants him rear facing at their destination.

Her response was that there are no studies nor is there documented evidence that a carseat would save her child's life on a plane so she doesn't see the sense in using them on the plane. She's not even gate checking, she's checking them with her luggage, so technically she isn't lugging them through the airport.

I was really hoping that there was a rule that a 2 year old needed something on a plane. He's a bit thinker, but no taller than my daughter. I really don't think the lap belt will fit him.

If I didn't already own a ridiculous amount of car seats I'd get a Next and loan it to her. But I have 1 child and 6 carseats.
