Nautilus 80 elite shoulder straps

My six year old is 45 lbs and I recently realized that his combination seat had a limit of 40 pounds when used as a harnessed seat. I'm not ready to switch to a booster yet, so I bought the graco nautilus 80 elite for extended harness usage. Unfortunately, he had some sensory issues and finds the strap covers extremely uncomfortable. This is the first seat I've had where they were not removable. Can you explain the reasoning? I hate to go against factory recommendations, but I really don't see the logic in this one. I really love the seat, but if this is a huge safety concern, it's a deal breaker for us.

You'd have to ask Graco about it.

What I've heard about other seats, so I don't know if it does or does not apply to Graco, is that different covers helps disperse forces over a larger area for an older/heavier child. So yes, it's unlikely Graco would have that restriction (since they don't on all of their seats) without it being a safety issue.

Yes, according to page 75 of the manual the harness covers MUST always be used with the harness.
Like Wendy says it probably has to do with distributing force for larger kiddos.

can you return the seat for something else?

I just googled this issue because our son is complaining and actually has red marks on his neck from the strap covers and your thread came up, what did you do to resolve the issue? We can't bring back the seat it was from Babies R Us.
