When out and about..?

Simple:
Stupid drivers not caring that they're driving through parking lots and talking on cell phones. They're completely ignorant of the fact there's pedestrians trying to walk though said areas.
Yes, I"m very paranoid about dd and MY safety in these zones.

It doesn't help that there's no sidewalks anywhere :( :(

It would be much more difficult to yak & drive slower speeds if there weren't so many automatic transmissions on the market.

Yep, other drivers -- are they distracted? (how many distractions?) + have they been drinking alcohol or using drugs? (even over the counter or medications that cause drowsiness?)

The large intersections aren't very pedestrian friendly & neither are the lack of sidewalks....

Otherwise: sexist/pornographic advertisements, which is why we will never live in Vegas, etc. or even visit until my daughter is capable of ignoring such filth (just my own personal oppinion :twocents:) Also, racists have literally chased me down before when Leila was an infant :thumbsdown::mad:

hmm... there are risks to our daughters all around:

- falling from my bike, or getting hit by a motor vehicle

- getting hit by a motor vehicle while walking across the street/walking in parking lot

- falling down while playing at the playground/running on the sidewalk

- getting lost in a crowd

The sexual crap advertisements. Thankfully CJ doesn't quite get them yet (he still thinks the scantily-clad girls next to the cool cars is dumb), but it's not something he needs to see.

Riding in school buses
Other drivers
Their own lack of forethought
Media/advertising that is inappropriate for children
Getting lost
Being kidnapped-- yes, I do worry about this. I actually think I'm a *bigger* target with more children, due to being easily distracted... :shrug2:
Witnessing violence and/or crime

I try very hard not to let my fears (no matter how well-founded they are) keep my child from experiencing life. However, one of my biggest fears is big crowds. I live in the suburbs, but its generally considered part of the Kansas City Metro Area, which is massive. Anytime we go to an event, like the Barnum & Bailey Circus in September this year, or Sesame Street Live earlier this year at the same place, I insist on carrying him almost the entire time. First off, its a BAD neighborhood (why do they do that? Or maybe it started off good when they built it? I doubt that - it was a bad neighborhood when my mom was a kid 30 years ago), there are tons of people, all strangers, and its a kid event, lala land for people who want to hurt kids, I'm sure. It just scares the peewaddin' outta me.

Its a much lesser extent at Walmart/the mall, unless its Christmas season and they're packed. I don't ever like being in public and not being able to see him. I wish it were different out there, but its just not.

Another big fear? Nothing to do with out and about, I guess, but I've always been scared to leave him with someone else. No one has ever watched him except my parents. (Except for his one day in daycare at 11 months, that was an awful mistake that won't happen again) And I don't intend for that to change. Just too scary to trust anyone else with a young child, even good friends.

Going the speed limit.
Amazingly. I do the speed limit through a speed trap near my home and without question, will get one or more tailgaters stacked up behind me. I've actually been passed around a blind turn a couple times. And one person tried to pass me on the left as I was making a left-hand turn into my road.

Me being too tired to drive.
I avoid driving mid- to later-afternoon if I've gotten too little sleep the night(s) before.

Swerving off the road.
And down a ravine (no guard rails, lots of deep ravines), not visible from the road, conscious, two kids in the car, and no cell-phone coverage. What would I do? Wait to be found? Lay on the horn and hope someone's going to drive by at some point and hear me?

Parking lots.
Cars flying through, oblivious to pedestrians and to little kids who like to dart away. (DD's in that stage now. Thankfully, DS's already outgrown it.)

Childcare.
I'm with a PP. The only person I trust is my SIL, who used to be a teacher. My first was a no-fear, try-everything, and very physically capable kid. (Still is.) When he was two, one friend lost him, another didn't watch him and he pushed another kid off of the play structure. Heck, even when DH was watching him he pulled a screen off the window, opened the sliding window, and climbed out to the front yard. So, no, I trust only my SIL, who, along with her DH and three kids (14 and 17), have altogether watched mine three or four times; and they're exhausted after those few hours and soooo glad to see me.

Faulty medical care. An accident at school. Hospital's 45 minutes away.
All of that in combination.

1) Getting kidnapped. Whenever DD runs off and I lose sight of her I have a panicky moment until I find her. So far she's pretty good about staying close and I pay attention. I worry about DH getting distracted (which is easily is) and him losing her. :(
2) Parking lots. It can't be just our area, but there's major shopping here (several strip malls and one huge real one) and people drive 20-40! through the parking lots. DD still likes to run around the car and I'm terrified she'll wiggle away at the wrong moment one day. I also see this ALL the time: Parents not putting their kids in their car seats because 'it's just a trip across a parking lot'. A huge SUV came within inches of me and my empty stroller when they whipped around my moms van at BRU. They didn't want to mess with the stop signs so they were darting through parked cars to get to the restaurants at the other end of this huge parking lot. They had their 8 or 9 month old in their lap in the front seat, going over 35 mph.

I'm still a little scared of car accidents but at this point, I've protected them the best I can. I'm still hoping we can get another car in the spring.

Re: kidnapping and/or molestion, etc. -- the vast majority of perpetrators are family members & trusted friends :twocents: (stranger cases make the news because it's more "sensational" but kids NEED to know that certain strangers are important figures to help them!)

I do worry about this, though: only because Leila's biological father has actually threatened to kidnap her out of the country.

yeah, that too, and also the violence ads and the fast food ads. these ALL worry me. at least they don't see them on TV, but i know they'll see them on billboards, in magazines, and on other people's televisions.

Logically, I know this, but I feel I can 'control' that more. Maybe I'm wrong. But my kids aren't alone with anyone other than my mom and DH (and DD goes to a SE preschool). Even if my ILs were otherwise trustworthy (which they so aren't) I wouldn't let DD visit the grandparents because of DH's grandfather. Maybe it's mommy instinct, maybe it's because my mother was molested over and over again as a child by different people and I'm overly cautious. But the reason kidnapping at a public place scares me is because it only takes a second of being distracted. No matter how careful you are at home, sometimes you can't avoid being temporarily distracted in public. Sorry if this took the thread OT

I know this too, yet for some reason I am irrationally worried about it. Disney was difficult for me, I was a bit obsessed about the kids either becoming lost and seperated from us, or taken. For me it all goes back to when DS#1 was an infant, DH and I were out shopping and had him in the buggy. We were looking at something on a shelf, and when we turned around, the buggy was GONE. Both of us panicked and freaked. It turned out that DH's aunt had seen us in the store, and seen that we were not attending to the baby so she took him and walked out of sight to see how long it would take for us to notice. Obviously it was good lesson for us, we NEVER should have been in a position where that was able to happen, but Needless to say, I have never really been overly fond of her since, but at the same time, LESSON LEARNED:eek:
